Aravinda, Gayan and Serasinghe conquers Fox Hill

Sri Lanka’s most anticipated motor racing event, the Fox Hill Supercross, concluded successfully on the 19th of April at the Fox Hill motocross track amidst a large umber of participants and spectators. Organized by the Sri Lanka Military Academy SLMA) and conducted by the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders SLARDAR), this year’s Fox Hill Supercross was sponsored by Hutch Telecom and Lanka IOC together with Cargills Ceylon, Exide, Kinetic Singer, National Savings Bank and Hemas. With over 20 events, and some of the best riders and drivers this country has to offer, the 16th Fox Hill Supercross was nothing short of phenomenal.

Starting from the Group SL-N Cars - Over 12 Kg/Hp, going onto win the Group SL-H Cars upto 1600 cc, Group SL-N Cars - 10 to 12 kg/hp and Group SL-N - Ford Laser / Mazda upto 1500 CC events, Upulwan Serasinghe won five out of the six events he participated in. Top driver Aravinda Premadasa along with top rider Gayan Sandaruwan also managed to bag honours in the supercar and bike segments respectively. Getting off to a flying start in the SL – GT Cars upto 3500 CC, Aravinda pushed his Mitsubishi Evolution to the limit to bring home the championship while motocross maestro Gayan Sandaruwan had some trouble in both the events he took part but managed to pull it off with a massive comeback by overcoming the tough Fox Hill track

Nuwara Eliya Road Races ends in disaster

The Nuwara Eliya Road Races 2008 was held on the 20th of April 2008 and witnessed the participation of many professional drivers and riders. Held a day following the country’s biggest motorsport event, the Fox Hill Supercross, the races were conducted by the Sri Lanka Motorcycle Club (SLMCC) and sponsored by Browns Exide.

The hopes and expectations of the thousands of spectators, competitors and enthusiasts of a memorable day of racing were dashed suddenly and unexpectedly with the crash of Dilshan Bandaranaike and Ajith Hemachandra in the SL-N Mini upto 1000cc event. Following the accident, the remaining 10 of the scheduled 17 events were called off immediately.
According to eyewitnesses, disaster started spelling itself out when Hemachandra overtook Bandaranayake towards the end of the second lap for a neck to neck race in the SL-N Mini upto 1000cc event with only a few feet between them. Bandaranayake then tried to overtake Hemachandra to regain the lead which resulted in him hitting the rear of Hemachandra’s car and crashing onto the sandbags and the center isle on the middle of the road at top speed.
After a struggle of some 30+ minutes to free him from the wreckage, Bandaranayake was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.  Remarkably, Hemachandra’s injuries were relatively minor and has recovered well at the time of writing this.
News of Banaranayake’s death sent shockwaves around Nuwara Eliya. The meet was called off immediately.

NUWARA ELIYA 4X4 LAKE CROSS - 2008

The annual ‘Nuwara Eliya 4x4 Lake Cross’ organized by the Four-wheel Drive Club of Sri Lanka in association with The Nuwara Eliya Motor Racing Club was held on the 16th of April in Nuwara Eliya in front of a huge number of spectators. For this year’s event, the organizing committee prepared the track for a man and machine combination in order to prove that the machine’s capabilities alone are not sufficient enough to complete an off road trail. Only 8 of the 32 competitors managed to complete the track within the specified time.

The prologue was held on the 5th of April at the Katunayaka Colombo abandoned express way giving them a different experience where the competitors had to drive for approximately 4kms under different track conditions in sand and mud.

This year’s event was clinched by Mangala Ahangama and co-driver Awantha De Silva in a Land Rover Defender who topped the rankings during the prologue as well. The 2nd place was won by Suresh Chathuranga and co-driver Ravindra Sanjeeva in their Range Rover. Deepthi Perera and co-driver Shammika Wickremasinghe, who were ranked 6th at the prologue, emerged 3rd in their Dimo sponsored Jeep Wrangler.
